Kippy's Spring Classic
The Kippy’s Tournament was a resounding
success. This is usually a well-attended function, but last week’s participation
was even greater than anticipated. The two day eclectic event culminated in the
presentation of a signature Kippy’s crystal studded belt to Low Net over the
Field (56) winner Felicia Bell. In addition, the runner-up, Mickey Scarbrough
(60) was also presented with a belt.
The luncheon was special this year because it was in
memory of Gwen Schoenfeld, a founding member of the Coronado Women’s Golf Club.
Gwen was a familiar sight on the golf course where she played every day until
shortly before her death in December. She delighted in meeting new people and
showing them the ropes at her beloved course. Even into her 80’s, to assure
herself and her groups of a tee time, she rode her bike to the course to pull a
number in the morning, then returned by car later to play.
Gwen often modeled in our yearly Kippy’s fashion show
because she was family. She was one of ten Kipperman siblings, many of whom
moved from the East to Coronado. Her sister Fran had a shop on Orange Avenue,
and her brother Lou and his wife Cil also started a store now famous for its
studded belts, purses, and apparel – Kippy’s. Their son Bob Kipperman now runs
the store and sponsors our yearly tournament with $400 in gift certificates and
the coveted first and second place belts. He and his wife attended the luncheon
this year along with his uncle Bill Kipperman. Gwen’s two daughters Alice and
Karen also came in from northern California.
Following the fashion show, a memorial tree was planted
for Gwen. Her daughters and other family members, plus long time playing
partners Gloria Ekker and Betsy Andersen and other golfing buddies threw in golf
balls. Near the 9th tee, this flowering tree will be a fitting reminder of that
well-dressed spry little lady who, with a jaunty stride, traversed the course
for fifty years.
President’s Cup
The May event is Match Play for five days. There will
be NO QUALIFYING ROUND and everyone will be in contention for the trophy. The
pairings will be made when it is determined how many players will participate.
After the first round of play, those who do not win their match will be placed
in consolation brackets. Everyone will keep playing matches and will be awarded
prize money based on the number of wins.
It may be necessary for the finalists to play an
additional match. This may be arranged on days other than the scheduled Tuesdays
and Thursdays.
Do you need some help with Match Play rules or routines? Call Pat or Barbara and
we’ll set something up.
